Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro has come out against a Japanese company's planned takeover of Pennsylvania-based U.S. Steel.
"Speaking from a state perspective as governor, if the U.S. steel workers aren't happy with this deal, which they are not, I'm not happy with this deal," Shapiro said Tuesday in a Philly talk with U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen.
Shapiro, who's in the running to be Kamala Harris' pick for vice president, joins a chorus of critics against the proposed U.S. Steel-Nippon Steel merger, which has potential economic implications for a key swing state and also "national security" implications, according to some of the deal's critics.
The Biden administration vowed to block the deal. So has former President Donald Trump. Lawmakers from both major parties have been critical.
Harris isn't expected to spotlight the issue, having already received the United Steelworkers' endorsement. Arbitration between the union and U.S. Steel over the planned $14.9 billion acquisition is set for August.
In May, Shapiro said he secured a commitment from Nippon Steel to move its U.S. headquarters to Pennsylvania as part of the deal, adding in a talk with TribLIVE: “Nippon has failed to satisfy the needs of the United Steelworkers. And I stand with those steelworkers and their jobs, and they are gonna have a seat at the table of any transaction, as they should.”
